GREGG ALF’S WORK CELEBRATED BY MYLUTHIER

Gregg Alf is widely recognized as one of the most important contemporary luthiers. His recent feature in MyLuthier, one of the leading international publications in the field, confirms the prestige of a career that has spanned over forty years at the forefront of high-level instrument making.

Trained at the International School of Violin Making in Cremona, Alf co-founded the historic partnership Curtin & Alf, which played a pivotal role in renewing the language of modern luthiery by combining classical tradition with acoustic research. Over his career, he has received numerous accolades, including multiple VSA gold medals and the Hors Concours title, establishing himself as a maker of concert instruments played by soloists and held in major international collections.

Beyond his work as a luthier, Gregg Alf is a highly influential figure in the field: he teaches, serves as a juror in top competitions, and curates major exhibitions, including the Messiah Stradivari show in Cremona and the Tokyo Stradivarius Festival. His instruments are part of loan programs at institutions such as the Royal Academy of Music, Dextra Musica, and the Amati Foundation.

Among his recent works, a 2025 violin modeled after a Guarneri del Gesù, featured in MyLuthier, stands out for its acoustic precision and reliability in concert settings, combining timbral depth and sonic clarity with the craftsmanship of contemporary luthiery and the soul of historical instruments.
